Snowmaking is just water and air under pressure, without any additives. Snow can be made if the outside temperature is below -4°C.
Water abstraction is authorised and controlled by the government, and the water taken is returned to nature when the snow melts. The reservoirs are filled in the spring when the snow melts.
A “just snow” policy has been in place for several years now, based on precise mapping of the resort carried out during the summer. This map is fed into the grooming machines, which are equipped with centimetre-accurate GPS. Thanks to this tool, the grooming service can obtain feedback on the thickness of the snow cover and inform the snow service of the snowmaking requirements, avoiding any overproduction.
Snowmaking helps to sustain the economy and jobs in ski resorts.
